My breast augmentation diary Fiona Simms, 44. Provo, UT
Six months before the surgeryI'd been thinking about breast augmentation for years. I'd always been self-conscious about my flat chest, but breast augmentation didn't seem like something I, a 44-year-old divorced mother of five, could really think about. However, my friend told me she'd had it done and said she loved her plastic surgeon. So, I looked up the surgeon's number and set up an immediate consultation. During the consultation I felt comfortable with him right away. I looked through a book of photos and found breasts I liked. We talked about the procedure, recovery, and results, and he answered all my questions. By the time I left his office I was sure I would have the procedure, so I started putting away a little money each month.
Six weeks before the surgeryAfter saving just over $3,500 I set up another appointment with the surgeon. At the appointment we talked about sizes again, and I decided to go with 360ccs of saline that would take my 32AA breasts to 34Cs. We set a date for the surgery, and I rushed home to call my cousin, Donna, who agreed to fly in and take care of me right after the surgery.
The night before surgeryI tried to turn in early, but I couldn't fall asleep. I was very nervous and excited.
The day of my breast augmentation surgery! In the morning Donna drove me to my surgeon's office. I decided I should stay conservative and asked my surgeon to use 330ccs instead of 360ccs. He checked to make sure they had a set of 330ccs. Fortunately, they did! I woke up a few hours after surgery, and even though I felt groggy, it was clear to me that I had breasts! I was wearing a very tight support bra, and I felt like I'd been hit in the chest with a board, but despite that I felt happy thinking that I'd finally done it. Donna drove me home and I slept all afternoon.
Day 1 After the surgery my first real day with my new body! To help with the swelling my surgeon inserted plastic tubes to drain fluid from the incisions he'd made in my armpits. Between dealing with those and taking lots and lots of pain medication, I did not feel wonderful. Donna took great care of me, and I spent all day on the couch.
Day 2I started to feel a little better and managed to stay off the couch for most of the day, but I was still very sore. The swelling had gone down a lot. Every time I looked down at my chest I could hardly believe it.
Day 5At my appointment with my surgeon everything looked good. He took out the drains. He told me I should wait two more days before taking off the support bra and having a proper shower. I was very tired of sponge bathing and could hardly wait for the two days to pass.
Day 7I felt much better, which is good because Donna had to return home. I took a shower and looked at myself for the first time without the support bra. Wow! I literally spent 10 minutes staring at myself in my bathroom mirror. Before I drove her to the airport, Donna and I went shopping. We found a beautiful new figure-hugging dress for me. Before, I would have been too embarrassed to buy anything that showed off my figure like that!
Two weeks laterI had been back to my normal routine for about a week, although I was still in some pain, when I felt a big lump in my armpit near the stitches. I called my surgeon and he told me it might just be a lymph node and that I should wait a day or two to see if it goes down. A day later the bump was bigger and there was a swollen line extending from the lump. I felt very nervous, and I called my surgeon again. He called me in for an examination and told me I had a swollen tendon in my armpit. He said it would go down by itself in a few days. I was very relieved to hear it, and he was right; a few days later the tendon wasn't sore anymore.
A month laterI had a wedding to go to, and decided my new dress would be perfect. It was definitely form fitting, but I felt and looked great (even if I say so myself)! A few days later I visited my surgeon for a final post-surgery check-in. With that out of the way (everything was fine) I have enjoyed every day of the new me since! | |
